Lauren-Brooke Eisen, senior counsel in the Brennan Center's Justice Program and the author of Inside Private Prisons: An American Dilemma in the Age of Mass Incarceration (Columbia University Press, 2017), explores the issues raised by private prisons (especially the incentives to keep them full) and offers research-based recommendations for keeping their interests aligned with the public's.
"The industry is plagued by severe problems of accountability and transparency," said Eisen, "when we talk about private prisons, we know very little about how they operate."
The Brennan Center is hosting a panel discussion with author Lauren-Brooke Eisen, Eli Hager of The Marshall Project, journalist & author Eric Schlosser, and Khalil A. Cumberbatch of The Fortune Society. The discussion will be moderated by NPR's Ailsa Chang.
